Thank You Nancy Bauer, Veteran Staff Member of ABH!

Nancy Bauer, a cherished staff member of ABH

On behalf of the Boards of Directors of Advocates for Better Health (ABH) and ABH | The Foundation, society members, and coworkers privileged to work with our cherished colleague Nancy Bauer, we want to wish her a fond farewell as she completes 32 years of service at the end of 2022.

We are full of profound appreciation and gratitude for Nancy as she has been the heart of our organization for more than three decades. As ABH’s Associate Director and the long-time editor of MetroDoctors, she has touched the professional, and personal lives, of hundreds of physicians, residents, and medical students. Nancy is a well-respected colleague, confidant, advocate, and friend to more than can be counted.

Even before her time at ABH, Nancy was a leader in the Twin Cities medical field. In 1977, she started as the Medical and Surgical Education Coordinator at Mount Sinai Hospital in Minneapolis. In 1983, she was promoted to Medical Staff Coordinator and continued to serve in that position through the merger forming Metropolitan-Mount Sinai Hospital.

Nancy took a career chance and joined the staff at the Hennepin Medical Society (HMS) in 1990. As part of “Other Duties as Assigned,” the HMS Bulletin, Journal of the Hennepin Medical Society became one of Nancy’s many projects. With little experience in editing and publishing, she took on the challenge and the journal flourished.

In 1999, Nancy and her layout partner, Sheila Hatcher, steered the transition from the Ramsey Medical Society (RMS) Bulletin and the HMS Bulletin into the new joint publication, MetroDoctors. Starting in 2010, under Nancy's editorial guidance, MetroDoctors expanded beyond medicine into public health trends which reflected the enhanced mission of the newly consolidated Twin Cities Medical Society (TCMS).

During her time at MetroDoctors’ helm, Nancy oversaw the development of an industry-leading journal celebrating the accomplishments of Twin Cities physicians, residents, and medical students. Throughout this long-history, the voice of physicians has been amplified by MetroDoctors.

As Associate Director, Nancy played a leadership role in many of our current and former projects. Named as one of City Business’ “40 under 40” in 1997, Nancy was honored for her work recruiting senior physicians to volunteer at the St. Mary’s Health Clinics for un/underinsured in Minneapolis. And also, for her role on behalf of HMS in establishing the Center for Cross-Cultural Health, where culturally appropriate education, speakers, and resources were developed for physicians and clinics.

Nancy served as the staff liaison for ABH | The Foundation and supported the community projects funded by the Foundation. Nancy is one of the first professionals that medical students meet at the White Coat Ceremony, as well as through her dedication to placing students in ABH’s Shadow a Physician Program. Many physicians met Nancy as she popped into their office to talk about joining our organization and perhaps even serving on the Board. Nancy truly represents how to do member service well and we all benefit from her leadership.

Never to be found at center stage herself, Nancy is in the wings having prepared for every detail to make sure others shine. We will miss Nancy’s generous, quick smile, how her personal touch makes a person feel valued, and her unwavering support of physicians and colleagues. Thank you for everything you have done with us!
