ABH Celebrates: Universal School Meals Becomes Law

On Friday March 17th, Governor Tim Walz signed Universal School Meals (HF5/SF123) into law, after it passed the Senate Floor earlier in the week. The bill passed the House floor at the end of January. We are beyond thrilled that this important bill will go into effect on July 1st, meaning  at the start of the next school year, all K-12 Minnesota students will have access to free breakfast and lunch, regardless of income. This bill eliminates stigma associated with receiving free meals at school, and will have a significant and positive impact on childhood hunger, allowing students to focus and learn in their classrooms.

This bill is one of ABH's 2023 policy priorities and we are overcome with joy that it is now a reality. We extend a hearty thanks to all of the amazing physician advocates who spent their time on this bill and called for a better future for Minnesota students, families and communities!

ABH staff joined community advocates and the Partners to End Hunger coalition at the 2023 Hunger Day on the Hill on March 8th.
